If the driver is the problem then try dowloading SiS Software Sandra, it will show you the exact model name and manufacturer info of your sound card so you can dwonload a driver for it. I hope this helps.

The same thing happened to me once. I thought it was my sound card and searched the internet everywhere to find a driver to reinstall my sound card. No luck. I finally thought maybe it could possibly be my speakers had gone out so I bought some new ones just in case. Guess what. They worked! Hopefully this is your problem. It would be an easy fix. It's worth a try for you anyway.

Windows 98 Sucks you need to get an newer OS. Soon no new hardware will work with 98. By the way Microsoft doesn't even support 98 anymore.

Sound built into motherboard is onboard sound, AKA also known as integrated sound. Sound from PCI card installed in PCI slot on motherboard is sound card. Make and model of motherboard or the sound card would help.
