Wait until closer to Christmas and then buy her a prepaid Cingular Cellular with a fairly small number of minutes. Have it blocked for 900, 800 numbers. When she runs out of minutes require that she purchase additional minutes from her allowance or allocate her only a certain amount of minutes (which you pay for) each month. She does not need a picture phone or one with all the bells and whistles. Let her learn to use it responsibly before upgrading it. Make sure she does not take it to school or loan it to friends.

Carefully explain that she has to pay for incoming as well as outgoing plans, etc.

Have you discussed this with her parents? Does she need a cell phone? Most phones are pretty much alike. I don't advocate getting texting because that costs alot, I do suggest you go with a pay as you go plan, and she is to pay for her time herself. I've known too many people who get their kids a regular phone plan and the kids rack up $600-$2,000 worth of charges in less than a month!

I would say if you are getting her a cell phone, definitely get insurance on it, because cell phones are easily damaged or stolen. Secondly, get a phone that has a plan with prepaid minutes that either you or her parents or she can refill as needed. If you get a monthly plan, and she goes over her allotted minutes, someone will be stuck with HUGE overage charges. Other than that, get a phone that is fun, with all the bells and whistles, if that is in your price range.

I would start out getting her a boost phone, it will teach her to use it reasonably and wont cost very much, Yes most people like to talk all the time on them , but I think its important to teach them that there is other things to do besides talk on phone and if she looses the phone all someone else can do is use up what time you have on it and not run bill up.At least till you see if she can use it wisely
