I would classify a good football player someone who possess good individual skill and good team player. A player who can make clever passes that other cannot see. Able to anticipate want is needed from him so as to make fast accurate decision. Another important aspect is he is able to cover someone elses role besides his and play at different position when needed.
Too often I have seen a player can only play well in his normal position. Quoting a left back for example. If he can only perform in that position and will do badly in right back on center defender, that is not good enough.
In modern game, I will find that is not sufficient. A good player (taking defender as instance) should be versatile to play in his normal position (e.g. left back) and also able make shift to right back, or center when the coach needed him to (during team mate injury or suspension).
