After seeing what happened to Iraq can you blame North Korea for wanting something to act as a deterrent. Thank you President Bush.

This changes the security calculus in the the Western Pacific.

Japan has elected a new prime minister and there will be considerable pressure for Japan to revise its constitution to allow more than 'self-defense' forces. Hawks will want Japan to develop its own nuclear deterrent.

Conservatives in South Korea will also want to develop a stronger deterrent. South Korea's foreign minister is all-but-elected as Secretary General of the UN so it will be interesting to watch how their Prime Minister reacts vs the UN's position going forward.

North Korea has just committed a very grave error, and underestimated the future actions will unfold from their decision. Unfortunately, the US is so overcomitted in the Middle East that we don't have a lot of options or leverage.
