Since i've been pregnant, I keep getting very constipated. I keep hearing that it's because of my prenatal pills and all the changes in my body. Has anyone else experienced this? and what did you do to make it better?

Constipation can become a problem in pregnancy due to hormonal changes affecting the digestive system. However, iron tablets can also lead to constipation as well as a lack of fiber in your diet. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum which are associated with pregnancy. Preventing constipation is a good start to preventing hemorrhoids.
Suggestions for constipation:

Regular exercise, especially squatting
Plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet
Drink plenty of fluids
Drink prune juice
Nux Vomica 6X three times daily
When you have to go..GO! Do not delay the urge to defecate.
Avoid straining your bowels (This will also help prevent hemorrhoids.)

Hope this helps - I had the same problem when I was pregnant.

Yes, it can be your prenatals that are doing it. My body has a nice way doing that to me if I don't get enough fiber in my diet. If your stools are very hard, try taking some colace. You don't want to strain too hard, or you could develop hemmorhoids, which are NO fun. Colace is safe for you to take, but you should check with your OB first. Oatmeal and bran cereal is a good place to start with getting some more fiber in your system.

It is more than likely the iron in your vitamins. I had the same problem with both my pregnancies. A good thing to do to battle it is to eat Raisin Bran or a high fiber cereal for breakfast. Also, try increasing the green veggies in your diet and drink plenty of water. If that doesn't help try drinking a cup of warm decaf coffee.

oh honey, i feel for you. it is quite normal and one of the *ahem perks of pregnancy. ha ha
fiber is good for you and your baby, and can also help move things along in your bowels. fiber is a good natural lubricant for your intestines and is reccommended for everyone. some fruits, cereals, lots of yummy things can help you feel better. If it becomes a greater problem for you, you can ask your doctor for a stool softener or a list of things you can take. most of it tastes pretty nasty, but will get the job done. remember, don't strain, it could cause hemmorroids, and you would rather be constipated than deal with them nasties! go when you feel the urge, don't wait, and relax. good luck!

instead of your prenatal pills try to use the flinstone chew-ables they have the same proteins and work just as well. my doctor advised me to take two a day as a replacement and they dont cause constipation. and drink cranberry juice and lots of water.

I became constipated too & boy did it hurt when I had to go #2. You just need to try to eat more fiber - cereal, bread, wheat crackers, baked beans, etc and drink more water. Sometimes too much cheese can make it worse. Don't stop taking the prenantal pills, you & your baby need them, just change your diet.

Talk to your doctor because when I was pregnant I was giving iron pills that caused constipation. When I talked to my doctor he changed my iron supplement and I no longer had any problems.

Doctors would usually give you Colace for constipation. Drink a lot of fluids and don't take any medication without checking with your doctor.
