Good question... I've wondered about that scene, too. It seems to me that after Tom makes the delivery, you seem to pick up on some electricity between him and the woman. Then you see him standing at the crossroads... and I just have to think that he follows that gal to talk with her some more.

Yes it symbolizes he is at a crossroads in his life. He has to choose where to go next. They hint that he will follow the woman back to her home and have a new beginning with her. It was her package that drove him to survive to somehow be able to deliver it someday. And yes I agree that anybody would have opened the package and I think he should've also. Even if he opened it he could still deliver it. Even though I really wanted him with Helen Hunt it is just not realistic after 4 years and I am so glad the movie took the more realisic end. I feel worse for Helen than Tom because Tom will be able to have a new beginning but Helen will always wonder what if. Actually Helen's husband has the worst deal knowing that he was his wife's second choice. A very tragic story but I like the hope that it illustrates for Tom Hank's character through it all. Very inspiring.

Who do the think the women represents, didn't she look like his former Fiancee, and who do you think the dog was, it was someone he lost at sea....
All the rodes were paved except the one leading to the women.
The tide brought him another 'sail'. The lady's property was in the middle of nowhere and was desolate like his Island, God was showing him where is was supposed to go, Fate made him not open the package because he was meant to deliver the package
to meet his new fiancee. Remember they showed the women at the very beginning.... That movie is so full of truth and so elevated. It is an awesome movie about overcoming the odds and having faith because God's help is always near. Keep watching the movie over and over and you will get more truth out of it.

Keep breathing because you'll never know what the tide will bring in....

The ending destroyed the entire movie. I can't believe they didn't open that package, man that made me angry. Wouldn't it have been funny if they did open it and there was a sattelite phone and a gps beacon inside it. Man that would be funny. And no-one, I mean no-one would have not opened that package, I would have opened it within 6 hours of deciding not to.

Should he go ahead to a new life, or try to forge something with the artist?

He was delivering the only package that he didn't open when he was on the island. I want to know what was in it.
