How is this supposed to happen?

Thanks.

Normally you wouldnt give your last boss as a reference unless he or she was a friend and also wanted to get out of that shitty job asap. give a coworker who is a friend as your reference if you need a ref from current job.

I think the new company dont generally expect you to give your current boss as a reference. But if you have been a good worker just tell your boss that you are leaving the company for "career advancement" and that you have enjoyed your time working there and you will keep in touch and that way its not leaving in a bad way. But the best thing to do would be to get a colleague to go as a reference for you instead of a boss

My girlfriend ahs this problem and can never get the courage to talk to her boss about it.

You'd probably have to be fairly friendly with him for it to work out perfectly. But any employer knows that people come and go with their careers. If you can convince him that you'd like to further your career and you think that this new job is the best way to do that and its right for you, then he should understand this with no hard feelings. Especially if you make it certain that he knows it was your current job that has given you a huge boost in career and you can't thank him enough for this opportunity.

Possibly in this case he would respect your honesty and treat you accordingly. But worst case scenario you explain to a future employer why there is no reference because you left for a better job and your employer was bitter. I'm sure you new employer would respect that then as well because it was out of your hands

Well first tell your boss that you really enjoyed your employment with the company,But now it's time for you to move on,Tell him that there is really nowhere left for you to go with the company,no advancements,Tell him you found another job with more advancements, Tell him you appreciate all you learned from him,and your coworkers,There will be no reson he wouldn't give you a reference,And make sure you give him 2 weeks notice.
Good Luck!

Just tell your boss that you're accepting a position that is better for you and you would appreciate a good reference if it ever comes up.

You should write a letter of resignation. There are some great examples online if you want to try googling it.
