It depends how competitive the keyword is that you want to get to number one for.
For example to get to number one for the search term 'obese penguin' which no one searches for, would be very easy. However if you want to get to the top for the search term 'paris hilton' it would take considerable time and effort.

It depends on a lot of things. Keywords, other sites that link to yours, number of people that click to your site when it turns up in a search.
It isn't easy.
