It depends on where you live. I joined a smaller gym and put $130 down and pay $30 a month. My friend only pays $20 at her gym (Gold's) and she didn't have to put anything down. I would suggest calling gyms in the area and finding out what promotions are going on before committing (like I did).

My husband and i had a bally's membership and they were relentless about their money even when my doctors said that i could no longer go to the gym because i had a really bad accident when i was pregnant, i hated that and how they treated me. Try someplace that would be willing to allow you to do a month to month and not have to commit into a long term contract. My brother and his wife go to Gold's Gym and I haven't heard anything negative about them. I wish you the best of luck with you venture, hope this help a bit!

I dont even know where you live.
Gaurenteed you wont use all the machines in a gym.
I would say one that has treadmill and some free weights will help you lose weight. Find out the work out you want to do first and then see if the gym can meet your needs.

Hard to say without having any idea where you live. Around here, we have "Curves" and a ton of other gyms geared to women only. Makes women feel less self conscience if they're not a size 4. I've heard good things about them and they are cheaper. (at least what I've heard.)
Good luck on your weight loss!

Your local YMCA , they are for the community. They have low monthly rates for single people and low monthly rates for family members. In their services they include indoor/outdoor pool, basketball court, racquetball court, nautilus, free weights, aerobics, dance classes, adult volleyball and basketball teams, and sports for children too. We live in Texas and we have a metro-family rate, that means that wherever we find ourselves in the USA we can use the YMCA's facilities. We are a family of 5 and it works great for us. We have been members since 1999 and we pay a family rate of about $65.00 per month.

If you have a friend to motivate you ---any gym will work! YMCA will do = cheaper!
Without a friend to motivate you? won't work no matter how expensive the gym is.
