Sounds to me like a mycotoxin. Fusarium tricinctum, to be exact, in an alimentary toxic aleukia form.

It's a fungi, look it up,

ADDED: It was mentioned that, "Fungi are not native to Iraq due to the dry heat that exists there nearly all the time."

Fusarium tricinctum (T2) has been researched by many countries including the US and possibly Iraq, as a bio-weapon. If there were a stash or stashes of such a mycotoxin in Iraq, they could have been obtained by the insurgents.

Sounds like cyanide or rat poison - radiation is another possibility (like depelted uranium pellets ground up to look like curry powder).

Fungi are not native to Iraq due to the dry heat that exists there nearly all the time. Some poisonous mushrooms could do this - which leads me to blame Haliburton.
