1. by installing free programs such as kazaa, screen savers, or desktops programs.
2. Just surfing the net and visiting certain sites

The Internet is a big ad. You need to protect your computer from this by installing a program such as ewido (link below) run a full scan and delete all malware and ad ware.

Viruses are of little threat anymore compared to spy ware. You can actually do more with a virus then ad ware but it will slow your computer down to an impossible non-working speed. You can get viruses by opening email attachments that have them or just by certain websites nowadays.
