Because no one would vote for them if they did. They say what the majority want to hear or they play off your fears......Take your pick.

The truth is subjective; facts are objective. One man's (or woman's) truth is another's falsehood.
For example, if you tell one group that the U.S. is losing the war on terror, it may believe you because politics is also subjective. But try giving the exact same speech to another group of people, and you will be tarred and feathered. Another example is that the federal deficit is getting out of hand. Some people's "truth" is that the deficit is too high, while others will say that as a percentage of the total economy, the deficit is fine. That's their truth.
Can you honestly say that Americans will all believe the same "truth"? We're too diverse to all believe in the same truth.
I honestly believe that politicians aren't outright lying all the time (although undoubtedly sometimes they do). What they do is tell "the truth" to the particular group of people they are currently talking to. It's their job to appeal to the greatest number of people.

If they told the truth, then they would not be politicians. The one who can tell the biggest lie and convince others to believe it is the one who wins the votes.
If a person told the truth, he/she would not have a chance at winning an election. It seems to work that way.

I've been asking myself this questions for a really long time, because I think politicians are stupid for lying, and your right they should tell the truth, who wants to be lied to right?.. then I realized lying is a strategy to attract the people. They just want to be elected and want people to think that they are going to make a difference in the world for others.. but all they do is make a difference in the world for themselves.

That is not what the American people want. Think about it this way. Bush said he was going to stay in Iraq. The people voted him. And his ratings are pretty low(this is what i hear at least). Clinton on the other hand, did almost nothing he said he was going to do, but yet his ratings were through the roof.
Americans don't really know what they want!
I am an American myself

Politicians, lie to get elected! Then they just keep on lying. The story of their lifes!! Suppossed to work for you, wrong!!
here in California, District 3, Representative Ed Cardoza, for about five years now, I have e-mail him lot of letters where the person in charge of the Brown Bag is making money for prostitution. Which by the way, supposed to be free! Still won't write me back!!

to be elected, they feel they have to say what people want to hear - whether it's the truth or not.
