A grudge is basically revenge, and haterid you have for someone who did something wrong to you. And in the movie this woman and her child and his cat were all killed by the father for no reason, and now she wants to kill everyone that enters the house.

The women and the boy (and his cat) were all killed in the house by the husband/father. The grudge is associated with their spirits and the house.
I can't believe they made a sequel to that stupid movie and The Sixth Sense hasn't gotten anything.

Ju-On (the name for this type of grudge): A powerful curse affixed to a particular place; caused by a spirit's malicious intent, it is most likely attached to the place that they were killed.
