There are some AWESOME japanese restaurants in Japantown in San Francisco (I think Chinatown is SO overrated, don't go there). I love Bennihana, it's so much fun! It's really unique. House of Prime Rib has awesome food but it's a little pricey. There's also the cheesecake factory which is SUPER popular. good dessert though and great prices.

Racha's near polk on Ellis (771 Ellis) and it is a good one. My favorite is probably Khan Toke:

Khan Toke Thai House, 5937 Geary, tel: (415) 668-6654
This is a classic place. Meals are served in the traditional Northern Thai style, with low tables and patrons sitting cross-legged on the ground. If you are worried about your legs cramping up, they have a unique solution: many of the tables actually have holes underneath them, so you can sit on the ground and dangle your legs down. Wear clean socks, because patrons must remove their shoes when entering. They also have classical Thai dance performances on certain nights. And by the way, the food is terrific, so there is more to enjoy than just the traditional atmosphere.

I also Basil at 1175 Folsom St. which is the only place I've ever found that has (or had, it's been awhile) bamboo juice.

EDIT:

Sorry I saw SF, and not East Bay. Take it Easy 351 - 17th St, Oakland (downtown) is good, but they close early (5 or 6). Soi4 on College (5421) isn't bad, they advertise as a sort of Bangkok street stand version of thai food. There's a place whose name I cannot remember at about the corner of College and Broadway that's good too (next to Wendy's).

Girl said EAST BAY!
I know Thai food. And I know the East Bay. My picks are...

Most Authentic: Thai Noodle on Nosrthside Shattuck Ave in Berkeley (cheap place, but this is what real Thai people ate, and they like to eat late!)
Best Atmosphere: Cha-am on Northside Shattuck Ave in Berkeley (good date place)
Good Karma: Thai Brunch at the Thai Temple on Russell and MLK. Sundays only! 11am to 2pm.

DO NOT EAT AT TUK TUK on Southside Shattuck. I used to be a waitress there. They paid me $15 per 6-hour shift plus paltry tips, and I often worked double shifts. The people who run the place are EVIL.

Dara Thai in Berkeley, 1549 Shattuck Ave, next to Cha Am. We went there one day because Cha Am was closed. That was 13 years ago and we've been going back to Dara Thai ever since. It has a family run feel, (because it is run by a family) and their food is consistently delicious.
