The atom gains or losses electrons

The atom either gains or loses an electron. Atoms normally have the same number of electrons(-) as protons(+) so they are neutral, no charge. If the atom gains an electron it becomes a negative ion. If it loses an electron it becomes a positive ion. Ready for a joke? Two electrons were walking down the street. One said, "Uhoh, I've lost an electron." The other says, "Are you sure?" The first replies, "Yes, I'm positive."
