Well, for a start "Eye of the Tiger" was the theme to Rocky 3 - a boxing movie starring Sylvester Stallone, so in that context it makes sense.

And as for "Notorious", take the lyrics in context - the song is about life in the music industry, giving your soul, muse and art to a business that profits from it. The full line from the song is "Don't ask me to bleed about it I need this blood to survive"

It then says:

"You own the money you control the witness I'll leave you lonely
Don't monkey with my business you've paid the profits to justify your reasons
I've heard you promise but I don't believe it that's why I done it again
No no notorious, notorious, notorious"

There is no obsession with "staying alive" here, unless it's a Bee Gees song. But you need to take the song and its lyrics as a whole instead of quoting half a line out of context to support a point.

Because that was what the 80s was all about!

It was a time where drugs and vice and homosexuality was on the rise. Like the BeeGees song, Staying Alive? It was an ode to people who were drugging and their "quest" to survive while on high!

80s was also the period where people were recovering from the war.

Because pretty much everything from the 80s sucked and all you hoped for was survival. We thought the 80s were going to kill us and it left us with such desperate feelings.

The cold war and the nuclear arms race were big while these folks grew up, plus Rambo and Rocky had been released as well.

Hi. Cold war, nuclear winter, environmental awareness, population explosion. They all contributed to a sense of loss of control. The songs reflected our need to regain that control. Smoove is correct.
