I am having trouble mounting shelving units into a brick wall without either the brackets falling out or destroying the morter. Any suggestions?

Get some lead anchors and pound them in. Make sure they aren't loose in the holes.

Try to align the holes into mortar rather than the brick.
Mark all of the holes with the shelf level with a permanent marker. From a hardware store, obtain lead anchors, as well as the screws that fit into it. The load on the shelf will determine the size and frequency of the anchors.

Using a masonary bit, drill holes of size as prescribed for lead anchors. Use a strong epoxy and put the anchor in, doing so quickly as the adhesive dries fast. Then hold the shelf up and drive the screws in.

This method will not destroy the mortar and is very strong, but will of course leave anchors behind if you remove the shelf later. The anchors are silver/grey, though, so they are not that visible.

The blue Tapcon® fastners work well in concrete, but not so well in brick as the stone often cracks.

there has to be something behind the brick wall to help hold it up. Probably plywood. Since you already mad a mess of the mortar, try drilling all the way through with 1/8" drill bit. When you hit wood, place a screw into the hole and tighten

Liquid nail works wonders, it comes in a tube for a caulking gun and simple to use, but the problem is...it wont come down easy so I would drill 4 small holes into the mortar joints near the corners of the sign and put plastic anchors in then, pop 4 screws into the sign into the anchors. The smartest way.

if you pre drill holes first and use some good anchors with some cement( from the spraygun/tube ) and then anchor the shelf into the predrilled hole that should do the trick .
but i also have seen some special hooks that glide over the brick to hang a picture in any homedepot/.lowes

its okay to drill in to the morter. it is a lot easyer to patch a hole in morter than brick if you remove the shelf. the right size anchor will make a big difference. good luck.

Buy the blue concrete screws (Tapcon brand)and pick up the masonry drill that it specifies on the box. Use a phillips head driver to fasten the screws. They will never come out.

You might need to get masonry & concrete anchors. I hope you drilled into the brick with a masonry drill bit - not into the mortar. Check this page out too:

The best, and easiest way is to drill holes, and use masonary screws. They will hold really good if you use the right size bit with the right screw.
