because in today's society success is based on how much money you make a year, so if you don't make that certain amount that means you are successful then society considers you inferior

First, money is a comparable metric. Everyone has/needs/makes money. The more money one has, the more they are "worth." Often, people define the success of life by how much money one made (e.g. Better football players make more money than crappy ones).
All this works against you since there is always someone else making more money than you --if you make it known how much money you make, you put yourself out there to be judged and eventually seen as someone who makes less than someone else.
Second, money defines people. How much, or how little dictates (so a degree) what I do. I can't travel to Paris without a few bucks in the bank.
Third, there are always legal and safety concerns. How can I skimp on my income taxes if everyone knows how much I really make.
Last, some things people just like to keep private.

Or perhaps, they're like me...they just don't know the answer to the question about how much money I make a year.
To tell you the the truth I don't make any money, because that's for the government's job. If I get caught doing it, they'll lock me up.

Most people see their salary as personal information. I wouldn't share my credit score with other people either. I don't necessarily want the world to know what I can afford and what I can't. Perhaps your question ought to be, why do I feel the need to know how much other people make?

Lots of reasons...but mainly because they do not want to be judged based on their income. Because they earn more or less than you does not make them a better or lesser person. But we all do make judgements don't we?

How much or how little you make is not anyone's business. If you want a ballpark figure, go to salary.com and estimate it yourself. Why would anyone want you knowing their personal information?

Here you go
If they think they don't make enough - they are embarrassed
If they make a lot- they are afraid you are going to ask for some

Because it's nobody's business. It's rude to ask someone how much they make.
