"Twice as many ducks as chickens" means:

2c=d because you need twice as many chickens to be the same as the number of ducks.

We know that 432 ducks left and that after they left, we only have half of the number of chickens.
d-432=c/2 or 2(d-432) = c

We know from above that d=2c, so let's substitute.

2 (2c-432) = c
4c - 864 = c
subtract 4c from each side
-864 = -3c
divide each side by -3
288=c

Since he had half as many ducks as chickens:
288/2=144

144 ducks left.

We can check this to see if our answer is correct. If there are 288 chickens, that means that there were twice as many, 576, ducks to start with. 432 ducks left the farm. 576-432=144.

D=duck, C= chicken

a farmer has 2D.
2D-432=D
-2D= -2D
-432=-3D
-432/-3= D
D=144

He has 144 ducks
