はい、私です。 [hai, watashi desu / Yes, I am.]

年は三年、日本語を学びます。 [kotoshi wa sannen, nihongo o manabimasu / This year is the third year I am learning Japanese.]

はい、難しいですが、日本語も易しくて楽しいです。 [hai, muzukashii desu ga, nihongo mo yasashikute tanoshii desu / Yes, it's hard, but Japanese is fun and easy too.]

Also, learning how to read and write after you learn how to speak is just stupid. The most important aspect of any language is its written form and what's the use if you spend two + years learning to speak it, but then have to start all over again just to learn how to read and write it?

Hi there! My husband and I live in Japan, so we're constantly "learning" more Japanese. I've been studying it on and off since middle school (minored in college)...and my hubby started learning after college. We're intermediate level, I'd say...comfortable conversationally. We don't think Japanese is "difficult," but since it's completely different from English, you have to have a good memory since nearly all words are different. The grammar is not too tough and the Chinese characters get easier as you learn more.
I encourage you to keep up your language study. Japan is a wonderful country and the people are so kind. Our neighbors are so excited that we're studying their language, too. If for no other reason, learn the basics so you can come here, travel and enjoy an amazing country. If you get beyond the basics, you may be able to use it (in some capacity) at work...makes you look quite amazing when job hunting. Good luck!

I'm trying to learn Japanese by watching anime. It's really not a formal way of learning, but after a few hundred hours watching things like Yakitate Japan, School Rumble, Naruto, and Bleach, I think I picked up a few things. Mostly sayings and phrases, but they're pretty useful.

If you're learning Japanese formally, then I would suggest watching these shows to help with your comprehension of the language. It's so entertaining that it doesn't even seem like you're learning anything.

Note: it is very easy to get hooked on these shows, so make sure that you have enough time to spare. Enjoy!

I've been studying Japanese since I moved to Japan and that was about 2 and a half years ago. It was very difficult at first, but once I became "basic conversational" it got easier because my language skills could grow on something. It is still hard sometimes but easier than before. Starting was the hard part.

As long as you stick with "Speaking", it's not particularly difficult compared with other languages. Do not start on Reading or Writing Japanese letters untill you're pretty good at Speaking because that's the really difficult part for Westerners. I used to teach Japanese.

yep, learning up to now hehe almost at conversational level but i can pretty much understand when the senseis talk (or even most of what's going on in anime or some show in japanese)... been learning seriously for about 1.5 years now (it's kinda needed at work :) ) it can be a challenge but i suggest learning reading/writing and verbal/spoken at the same time :) it'll help in the long run... kanji can be a pain at times but it's just a trick of balancing the time :)

I have been trying to learn, but the software is a bit expensive so I use www.japanese-online.com. They have free lessons, but it isn't that great.
I would like to know a better way aswell.

I have had an interest in Japanese culture for a while. I love it.

Im still learning, Just finished with the alphabet to be able to read and write. Now going to simple phrases and conversations. If you don't have time to learn the alphabet, it's ok, you can study using Romanji.

Its not that hard, especially since the letters/sounds are easily pronounced.

Goodluck!
