Let's assume I have a good nestegg saved up, so I don't need a job right away. But, I don't have enough to buy a house. I will need to rent a modest sized place. Maybe a 1br apartment or loft. Not a studio(not that modest). What are some suburbs/small towns that have a lot of rental space, but is not ghettoish, and not super expensive Beverly Hills type. Lets say I can afford 1500/month for rent. What would be the nicest place to rent space in that price range in Cali?

Tons of places. If you're looking near SD, these towns are surrounding:

El Cajon
Mira Mesa
Poway
Temecula
Del Mar
La Jolla
Cardiff by the Sea
Oceanside

Or if you want to live closer inland in small towns, there's:
Julian
Ramona
El Centro
La Mesa

1500 range is a very nice 1BR or a decent 2BR 2BA. (800-1000 sq ft.) There are more factors to consider, but those are some places to start your investigation. Good luck.

Hey Martin,

I noticed that part of your question had to do with "Rental Property" - At $1500 - Look also at the following communities:

Normal Heights
North Park (South Park is better but usually not much available for rent)
Hillcrest (It's called "Bohemian", that means Gay, Old and Yuppie)
They are all near the Freeway system.

Also,

Bay Park
College Area
Point Loma/Loma Portal
Ocean Beach
These area's are not as freeway close, have rentals but parking is usually at a premium.

You also might be able to find a deal in the downtown area (SEE jit's response on the Craig's list) - But parking again might be a difficulty.

Good Luck,

James in San Diego

A city called temecula. Located about 1 hour from both Downtown San Diego and L.A. VERY CLEAN, small town feel, $1,500 would rent you about a 1500 square foot house. 30 minutes from beach. Lots of young families. NOT GHETTO at all. Master planned, lots of wineries, golf courses, chain restaurants. Affordable, close to big cities without having to deal with them. I've lived here for 18 years and love it. No better city in Cali in my opinion. Good Luck!!!!

There is so much more to California -- do you want to live in the mountains? Desert? Valley? Do you like hot weather? Cold weather? Do you want to live next to the ocean? Or do you want to live where you can access the mountains and ocean within an hour or so?

Be more specific. There are many lakes and beautiful areas. There are cities, laid back communities . . . what is your preference?

Do you like to go to musicals? Baseball/basketball games?

California has all types of communities, people, weather, and so on.
