Flow through a membrane is termed osmosis. Fluid typically flows from regions of low solute (salt) concentration to high solute concentration.
There are exceptions to this, but those systems require input of energy. Examples include: active transport, reverse osmosis (driven by pressure, etc.
Although, the cell membrane is a lipid, water is such a small molecule that it is able to flow anywhere it is thermodynamically more stable, so the cell membrane is totally permeable to water. Solutes, like salts and sugars are sequestered or hidden in the cell, and water comes in to dilute them.
