Once fossil fuels run out in the not too distant future, and hydrogen technology and/or other sources of energy don't or can't fulfill our energy needs, what do you believe will happen to civilization? (Serious replies please.)

Who's to say other technologies won't fulfill our energy needs, for starters? I think human kind can adjust to living at a lower energy level. That is, if we survive the absolute chaos that ensues when/if petroleum reserves run out in anything resembling a sudden fashion. Human civilization will probably be just fine, if we look to the long term. Adjusting to a lower energy world would probably include things like lower populations, and more dispersed populations.

But then, what do we consider the height of civilization? If we've set ourselves up in such a precarious way, totally dependent on an energy source we know full well is finite, and then lagging when looking to alternatives we know we'll someday need, maybe we could still be a little more enlightened.

There is no solution to this problem due to the fact that the human race did not evolve in an equal way. First world countries, the consumers of almost all the resources, are far more developed that all those third world countries in which people rely only on their hands. We are not at the peak if you see the population as a whole You can have a peak when you have a homogeneous group of people doing something together. In our case, only the first world countries are at the peak of their resources. Too much greed maybe. If you would like to maintain the same life style, you will have to do something with the rest of the world. Lets say: kill them all and take their resources. Sad, ha?!

We have had depressions in terms of graphs regularly. Some people say that we peaked around 1999, or 2000. The fact is that our civilization will continue to decline until the energy we have goes up or the population goes down. Really, its been constant ups and downs, and there is no telling when we will peak for the last time. Long Story short, the peak may be near, but it may return evenutally, there is no way to tell.

There are a small group of people that are now pulling energy from the void using an Motionless Energy Generator (MEG). Sound like science fiction? So did electricity once.

Energy is the least of our worries. The spread of Islam will drag human civilization into the dark ages for the next thousand years.
