I apologize for asking this again, but I'm begging anyone w/ knowlege of SPSS to come forward & help. I'm trying to run a T-test between a pretest group & a post test group. I think I'm doing everything right, but the output is all funky. Can someone run through step-by-step how to run a T-test in SPSS?? Surely I'm just overlooking something...

Follow these steps to run the t-test on the within subject data file:
1. open the within subject data file

2. select "Statistics", then "Compare Means", then "Paired-Samples t-test"

3. highlight both "incong." and "neutral" in the left box, and move them over to the "Paired Variables" box

4. Click on "OK"

NOTE: On your within subject t-test output, under the heading "paired sample test" the "mean" value is the difference between the incongruent and neutral means (D), and "sig." is your p value

Follow these steps to make a graph of your within subject data:

1. select "Graphs", then "Bar"

2. choose "summaries of separate variables" and then click on "define"

3. move incong. and neutral to "bars represent" box

4. Click on "OK"

Follow these steps to run the t-test on the between subject data file:

1. open the between subject data file

2. select "Statistics", then "Compare Means", then "Independent-Samples t-test"

3. move "mean" to "test variables" box, and move "condition" to "grouping variable"

4. click "define groups" and type "1" in beside "group1" box, and "2" in beside "group2" box

5. Click on "OK"

NOTE: On your between subject t-test output, ignore the F and sig. value under the heading "Levene's test for equality of variances". This is not the significance value for your comparison. Use the t value, df, and sig. (p value) under the heading "t-test for equality of means".

Follow these steps to make a graph of your between subject data:

1. select "Graphs", then "Bar"

2. click on "define"

3. select "other summary function"

4. move "mean" into "variable" box

5. move "condition" into "category axis" box

6. Click on "OK"
