can i buy a photocell switch for a light that was not wired with one?

Sure, you can even get a socket with a photocell built in. Screw it in existing socket and screw in the bulb.

Yes just wire it in line on the hot side of the switch, meaning the line side, black or red.

yeppers, Black to black hot wire, Red wire goes to the black of the light, put the whites together
