Pi is the ratio between the distance around a circle (circumference) compared to the distance across the middle (diameter). a circle is roughly 3 times as far around as it is through the middle - we usually use the value 3.14 but actually the exact value is one of those weird numbers that just goes on and on beyond the decimal point without ever finishing, so sometime people use a big computer to figure out the exact number to about a zillion decimal places.

Because pi is a ratio of the distance around vs through a circile, we use it for all kinds of calculations that have to do with circles, like if we know the distance around and we want to know the diameter, or vice versa. Or if you want to know the area of a circle, or the volume of a sphere (ball) or of a cylinder....

You're in university, and don't know this? Pi is used to find the circumference of a circle. Pi x r2 ( r is radius)
