How do you know that your boyfriend really loves you?

He always says it but I'm not sure I ever saw it. And our relationship is long distance, so in order to find out if he really loves me, I asked my friend to hook up with him since i'm so far away, just to see if he would give in to it or if he would completely reject her. Now I can't get in contact with her and I don't know what's going on cause he never mentioned anything to me about her. Am i doing the right thing? And if I'm not, what should I do?
