CO2 will not burn. What we need to do is break it up into Carbon and Oxygen. Plants do it and so can man, but as plants rely on CO2 to survive when do you stop?
The held simple solution, if there is such a thing, is to reduce emissions, stop de-forestation and plant more trees. Problems are the industrialised countries have difficulty reducing emissions no-one wants to pay), and Rain Forrest wood is the main exports for the countries where they grow.

Where do we start?

CO2 does not damage ozone.....Your question Tam: "burning co2 from the earth?
its possible to extract gas from the earth by drilling for oil, and burning off the gases. would it be possible to burn off the co2 by drilling without further harming the ozone. "

It IS possible to burn CO2, but at a cost. In a manner of speaking, trees and other vegetative life 'burns' CO2: they join the carbon and oxygen atoms into larger molecules know as carbohydrates (starch or flour, for example, used in baking bread) and give off an extra oxygen after their process cycle is completed. For this they need water (H2O) from which hydrogen for the 'hydrate' in 'carbohydrate' is used in their process.

From carbohydrate is formed hydrocarbons, and that is what they drill for in the earth, gasoline or otherwise known as petroleum. So, in a way, we do burn CO2, but not like the flowers, and when we burn them, we get more CO2. So, what we need to reduce atmospheric CO2
is more flowers and trees. Then we may start the whole process all over again. bueno dias.

It would seem sensible to at least use the gas being 'burnt off' for power generation.
Remember all that CO2 we are on about was once part of the earth's atmosphere until green plants came along. We are only putting it back!
