i live in new york city and everytime the water pools somewhere and dries, there will be red stuff left behind. not sure what it is? is it safe to drink? even after Brita filtering, the stuff is still there...

I am only assuming, but it may be copper from older pipes.

Or Iron rust as stated above.

Depending on the age of your place:
1950-1970's Iron was main type of piping.
1970's to 1980's Copper pipe.
Around early to mid 80's PVC really started coming on the
market.

Rusty water will sometimes have the iron smell like in old blood.

Till you find out for sure do not drink it, call the water company and ask, or check with others.

It is rust from old pipes. People have been drinking it for years.

Probably old pipes have either sediment or rust
