Pretty crappy.

Take an image of English fuedal society (with knights and serfs and kings) then change the names (cossacks, peasants, and Czars) make everything colder, and put it in a world where all the other countries had already had their industrial revolutions.

Oh, and you're at war and thousands of people are dying each day.

The impression I have gotten from history books is that Russian society prior to 1917 was sharply divided by class. There was a very rich aristocracy (privileged class) and a very poor working class, both ruled by a monarchy.

While some consider Czar Nicholas 2 a just man he led his people into a series of wars which ravaged the Russian economy and caused untold suffering amongst the working class.

If you want a good insight about the Russian upper society, especially that of the royal court you should read the memoirs of Catherine the Great

It was like all monarchies at that time, just that they have more wealth and splendor. Read The Romanovs and you will find out

there were many revolutions and people were not atheist cause it was not banned yet, I think they were orthodox christian or into alchemy
