I'm a big fan of Douglas Adam's "Hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy" series. They're funny, witty, and clever. If you haven't already I'd seriously recommend reading at least the first one.

Depending on what you like since your answer was not specific as to tastes I can reccomend a few:

Mack Bolan The Executioner: Vengeance by Don Pendleton in the action/adventure genre

DeathLands :Pony Soldiers By James Axler is also a good book in the Post Nuke Holocaust style of sci fi

in the Star Warsesque style of sci fi I'd reccomend Knights of the Black Earth by Margaret Weis and Don Perrin for that style also

the book of Bartletts Familiar Quotations is a good book. It's always funny when someone insults you and you say a sophisticated quote from that book to them and they look all puzzled.
