Is it the ridiculous character designs, or the use of camera pans to avoid actually animating? Or is it the 10 minute bits of dialogue with absolutely no movement whatsoever, save for a pair of perpetually shaking eyes, and the mouth? What is good about anime?

In what way do I have to answer your question to get it through your head? You keep asking the same question about anime. And its really frustrating when someone doesn't GET IT the first time.

Rick H, Proto and Samandiriel basically provided the main argument, I'm just putting in my two sense worth.

What's so good about anime? EVERYTHING. From the storylines, to every exact detail of the characters, anime is the best thing that you are going to get out of the Japanese.

FIRST of all, what "ridiculous character designs" are you talking about? I'd like you to give me proof. Yes, there are some anime out there that have bad character designs, but that is only very very very FEW. The majority of anime have mind blowing character designs right down to the rings that the characters wear. IF ANYTHING the character designs are overly detailed and worked on! Not all anime has bad character designs, I don't understand why you are looking at anime as a whole.

It seems like you're one of those convervatives that are just stuck on the same viewpoint and you wont budge even though you are in the wrong. DONT JUDGE anime as a whole. If you see one bad anime, brush it off and start anew. Dont just think that if you watch ONE anime then every single anime is going to be like that.

10 minute bits of dialogue with no movement??? Huh? What planet are you living on kid? I've never seen this in my life. Take out the dubbing versions of any anime, since the American company is probably cutting out anything and everything graphic in any way, because they think that their viewers will be taken aback. I mean, give me a break! Out of all the anime that I have watched, I have never seen 10 minutes of dialogue with no movement. Um.. hello? Each episode is only 25 minutes long, they cant have 10 minutes without the character moving!!

What's good about anime? Why don't you go and watch some classics like Naruto, Bleach, Escaflowne, Ceres, or Shakugan no Shana and then see if you can ask me that same question again. Oh and don't forget to watch it in Japanese with english subtitles. Because english dubs are what has corrupted your mind to think the way you are. You don't see the original make of the anime, and still you start ranting about it's flaws? Thats not right.

ridiculous character designs:
its not. it is more real looking then normal cartoons. and in some its ment to be that way. plus anime guys are a lot of the time very sexy. and for guys im sure the girls are. the character designs are awesome.

the use of camera pans to avoid actually animating:
thats kewl. and im sure u cant do that. and actually is animating too.

the 10 minute bits of dialogue with absolutely no movement whatsoever:
there is some but thats cause they dont need to move. but its not like their completely still. they do move just not A LOT sometimes. mostly its not like that.

what is so good about anime?:
everything. you can practicly find an anime for any subject. the characters can be kewl, hot, sexy and you can relate to them in more ways then one. the characters are more real looking, and animes actully have story plots. it can be funny, sad, dirty, adventerous, and pretty much anything else you can think of. what is there not to like about anime? I dont know what planet your livin on. Anime is the best thing in the world. its a life style. me personally, i live for anime. how can u not like it. you cant like every anime u see. but thats fine. u find ur favorites and the ones u like. and with some u might see ONE episode and think "oh this sucks!" or "this is boring!". well i got news, it could just be that ONE epiosde and the whole series could be really good. and also u cant just judge an episode by one scene. u have to watch that whole episode. also u cant judge all animes by one series. EVERY SERIES IS NOT THE SAME!!!!

There are different types of anime. I agree- at one end of the specturm you get DragonBall-Z, with tons of panning and little animation, and at the other extreme, Ghost in the Shell/Witch Hunter Robin- where the artwork & environments are fantastic but only the lips move, but look at stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo & Steamboy. No such problems, and the depth of storylines blows away most American efforts. There was even a Macross movie from years ago that was incredible.

The only good US animation is the Pixar-style CGI movie stuff, like the Incredibles and Shrek. The cartoons on TV these days are just awful compared to anime.

I'm waiting for Kikiia to come in about now to destroy your argument, did he just say "ridiculous character design". I don't know what world you live in but I'm certain that a show about a sponge that lives in the sea can't be any more plausible than anything I've ever seen. It's obvious to me that you have a bias that I'm sure no answer could quench, no matter how detailed or thought out an argument can be presented to you. It's true that animators don't use as many frame rates, you know why? because they don't have to, they've developed a way for it to appear fluid without using unneccessary frames, more power to them for saving production costs. I don't know what your problem with anime is, were you molested by an otaku? honestly, why don't you do yourself a favor and find someone(male or female) that you can share your rants with, because imposing your views on others without plausible evidence is the same thing as being intolerant.

Anime is good because the characters are more realistic than other cartoons. They are closer to movie characters in their personalities and actions than they are to other toons. And I love their camera pans. It's like watching a movie with good camera shots; it can change the whole quality. They need a lot of dialogue because their stories are fully developed, needing more than a hammer and some string to get rid of the bad guy.

It's far better than American cartoons, if you ask me and probably any other anime fan (it all depends on the anime you're watching and the cartoon you're comparing it to). The word cartoon sort of refers to the American style of animation, while anime refers to the unique Japanese style. Anime influences American entertainment more than you may think. The hit movie The Matrix was based solely on anime; "bullet-time" (the slow motion sequences that were introduced through The Matrix) were originally found in most anime. There are at least two or three anime that had influenced The Matrix; in fact, there was a segment on how anime influenced the making of the movie, as well as its sequels. Also, anime was originally intended to be only for adults, and never kids (it's quite common in most anime to find dark or sexual themes, like women getting raped, tons of murders, blood and gore, and the dark elements of human nature). Over time, I think, anime was made more for children, and now there's anime for tiny kids to older adults. It's just the fact of how different and unique anime is when compared to everything else, that makes it so awesome and adored the world over. Anime should deserve more respect and recognition, if you ask me.

IF you have only seen Dragon Ball Z, then you have some problems. By the way, the creator of anime want to make a new style of art by baseing it on american comics and fantaisa he can up with manga. from manga came anime. It isn't as bad as you think. DBZ was bad but not ALL anime is.
