Is this really normal? Every single thing I've read online has stated that I should be feeling a ton of pain and be very unstable. I'm going to see an actual ankle specialist on Tuesday but this guy sounded really grimm about my ankle. He told me I had some torn ligaments and a fracture on the back of my tibia. Right after I twisted in (about 7 days ago) it did hurt and swelled up a lot, then it DID bruise a ton...But now the swelling has gone down a lot. Even right after I did it I could walk on it. Now, I can walk on it fine with no limp or crutches or braces. This completely goes against everything I've read, like I said, about what he said. I would think I should be feeling SOME hurting, but it's more of an irritation. It honestly doesn't hurt much at all. I could see if I NEEDED crutches or something but as of right now I can stand on one foot with nothing else holding me up. What gives? He told me he thinks I was going to need surgery and definitely a cast...I'm a bit skeptical.

Yep, sounds like my experience! I did actually have a fracture and several other fractures up the femur, so it was a bit of a bigger "ooops" than this, but I didn't feel much pain after a few days. I was put in an air cast and didn't really bother with the crutches. The main thing is not how it feels, but HOW IT HEALS! The actual problem is that if the ligament fuses incorrectly (think of rubberbands), you could have an abnormality that impairs your walking ability for the rest of your life. That does sound scary, yes, but regular physical therapy and movements/stretches that the specialist gives you will strongly decrease the likelihood (if there was any) of surgery. Good luck with that!

It sounds kind of strange but it can happen. A ligament can actually completely tear, and you'll get swelling at first and some tenderness, but as the swelling goes down the pain goes away. It's what happens with an ACL tear too. Ligaments don't have much of a blood supply that's why they don't repair themselves and require surgery to get repaired. Like the person said above, it's how it heals...you want it to heal correctly, and even though it may feel fine, you can still have an instability because the ligaments are totally gone. i wouldn't doubt what the PA said, but the ortho specialists will know more of what to tell you!!

Been there and many times. Much, much pain. Sounds like you might have had a good sprain and since it was swollen, if they took x-rays perhaps it was distorted due to the swelling. If you had torn the ligament and fractured your tibia, you would feel it for sure unless, (no kidding) you were retarded. My cousin is and she doesn't feel pain like "normal" people do. Believe me, the pain really sucks with torn ligaments, worse than a break.
Good luck and make sure you get yourself a good dr. and tests to prove what is going on. If you're feeling this good, I'm sure you'll have good news on Tuesday.

A torn ligament could be quite undesirable, as im optimistic you're conscious. in line with risk get some flight socks to compress it slightly, that would desire to assist. save your foot shifting at an identical time as your on the plane, as in case you dont then it could bring about swelling, and doubtless even a deep vein thrombosis. Drink a good number of water, stay away from alcohol,a dn caffiene. try to save it greater as much as achieveable, and get ice on it as quickly as poss once you come back off the plane. try to chase away of your ft as much as achieveable!! I certainly have torn a minimum of two ligaments in my ankle as quickly as I broke and dislocated it some weeks in the past. i'm flying in 2 weeks, and thats what I certainly have been cautioned!! good success!

I don't think the P.A. knows what he is talking about. You should be able to pinpoint the fracture. I would call and ask him to let you know what the radiologist report said. They should have one.
