the best way to teach him to lunge is put him a round pen (if you have one ) and put the lunge line on him and take a whip (don't whip him with it) and crack it behind him and he should run. every time he stops just crack the whip again and he should keep on running. just keep working with him every day and he should catch on to it.

If your horse walks on a lead well, then start facing the colts left shoulder with the lead in your left hand and your hand pointed left. moves sideways and encourage him to walk straight while you move sidesways to your left. once he gets that down you and every other step you stop but keep encouraging him to move forward, slightly turn in a cirlce as you take your steps. this way you both are walking in a circle. try to stand and spin around, telling him to walk on as you spin. a baby sometimes only walks if you walk also. once he understands that its okay for him to move if your not, then you can practice with a longer lead then a lunge line, just do this at a walk until he totally understands what you are asking of him. make sure to do both sides equally. let me know if you have other questions about this.

imaknightangel : your can teach a baby to lunge. you should never wait to long to teach this, if you wait til the horse is 2 or 3, thats over 2 years the horse can teach itself to be unbalanced. by lunging you can assess if the horse has any leg or balance issues and correct them. i wouldnt say teach a 3 month old to lunge. but my colt was 6 months old when he was taught to lunge. hes now 2 1/2 and he can lunge by verbal command and stops on a dime. all stuff you want a horse to know before yu ever get in the saddle. its safer for you as a rider and the horse as a youngster.
