Have them write their resume, than ask them what they want it to look like when they graduate. Get copy of job application for position at your college and make copy for each freshmen, and explain that what answers they will be able to give is up to them. Recommend they read What Color is Your Parachute.

Relate it to something they know and are interested in, such as their future quality of life. Tell them that the money they make during their career will help fund their future quality of life. To do things that enhance their career will bring them more money and better quality of life.
Explain what it means to enhance their career, advanced education, special assignments etc.
