When I was a teen - a long, long time ago - we went steady. One guy, one girl for however long it lasted. College girls got "pinned" - same idea but you were older and it was a step before engagement. Is a "promise ring" similar to our going steady ring? Just curious.

A "promise ring" is another name for a "purity ring." It can mean two things...it can symbolize a guy or girl's decision to not have sex until she is married (thus the purity part, and the promising to wait for your spouse). That's the kind of ring that I have. Or it can be rings that couples get together and wear to show that they are serious about their relationship and see it going somewhere in the future. A promise ring is a "I promise to be committed to you for now" symbol. Yeah it's similar to going steady. It has nothing to do with "pre engagement" which is what some girls tend to think.

A promise ring is a hoop given to permit the woman realize that he needs to invite for her hand in marriage in a while of their dating. Now because of this marriage is defiantly a probability and that it is going to be performed a while one day.
