Vinegar, baking soda or borax will help but if you think it may be organic in nature (food, germy gunk etc) run a hot wash with bleach and no clothes. It may be that some creature like a toad or some other creepy-crawly got into the inside of the washer drum if your washer is outside your home. I had a toad inside mine. The repair man put a screen over all openings underneath the bottom. It worked. And yes I was Very embarrassed.

Do not use bleach, you don't want to be eating off anything that has had this harsh chemical on it.
Run machine with a mixture of bi-carb soda and brown vinegar, the bi-carb will take the smell out and the vinegar will make it shine like new.

The best thing I've found is to put a whole gallon of bleach in and run it through the longest cycle, with hot water. After that you can run another cycle with just water to ensure that there isn't any bleach left for your next load of clothes.

Your washer is probably too new to be the source of the scent, i could say it replaced into coming from the opening pipe, the single your washer drains into, attempt some plughole purifier in one day, or white vinegar and bicarb, then flush out with boiling water. solid success...and Merry Christmas x

Wipe down the inside of your tub and remove any debris you might find.
Do several loads of towels with detergent & some bleach in hot water.
If you have a front loader, leave the door unlatched, cracked open after use so it can get some air inside.

the answear is the smell is coming from your sewer and through the washer, pour a couple of gal lens of clorox down the sewer drain, or wash tub drains, plug the hole for about 3 hours, than flush the drains out real good with fresh water. Its good to do this once a month.

Fill the machine with HOT soapy water, and about a cup of bleach.Let it run through the cycles, and that should do the trick.
