ram will allow more programs (not just the OS) to run faster and better. it will also allow you to run more programs simultaneously. more ram is good for people who play games on there computers. however everyone should have at least 512 megabytes of ram. that much is good for just around anybody.

I'm not that hw saavy, but I don't know if you can just replace one chip, or must do both at the same time.
But, adding RAM will make your laptop respond faster, specially when what you're working on is having different applications open. Memory helps because it prevents having your programs to access the hard drive, and a hard drive is several times slower than RAM.

RAM is one of the most easyest and cheapest upgrades availible to do to a computer, laptop or desktop. Its like having to move 2,000 apples, and you have a basket than can hold 200 apples at once, you need to make 10 trips right? Well if you put 512MB in your laptop, its like taking that 200 apples at ten times and getting a bigger basket that holdes 1000 apples, so it takes only trips. This would speed things up Significtally. If your computer is running Windows XP, 512-1GB is required to run it well. Hopes this helps!

Just a suggestion: Take out both and replace with 1 GB RAM.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This will be 694 MB of Ram over your current 256. You will probably notice a difference. The computer may load a little bit faster. Windows XP didn't come out until 2002, so maybe you can upgrade to that if you didn't already if you get new RAM. You will definietely notice some speed changes. It will be faster than the ~average~ computer today.

It should help it be faster, minded that there are no other issues with the computer that could be causing problems. But double check to make sure that your computers motherboard can support 512MB, certain motherboards can only handle a certain ammount of RAM.

Go online to Crucial.com and let them check your laptop to see how much RAM your motherboard can take. They'll tell you what's what. You don't have to buy from them. Once you know what to look for, check pricing at your favorite sites.

Take a look thru the FAQ about memory and most of your questions will be answered. Also, you can use the configurator to find out exactly what your computer will support.

It will run better and faster. You can have more applications open and the PC won't "stutter." I personally have 2 gigs in mine. : D
