Bill Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives in December, 1998. The charges were perjury and obstruction of justice, arising from the Lewinsky scandal.

Instead of resigning at this point, he appealed their decision and decided to plea his case; therefore, he took it to trial which is conducted by the Senate.

At the conclusion of this trial, the Senate fail short of the two-thirds necessary to convict; therefore, Clinton was acquitted in February 1999.

An impeachment is an article of congress "accusing" the president of high crimes and misdemeanors. After a hearing, the president is either convicted or acquitted. Thereafter, the president may be rebuked or removed from office.

President Clinton was the last (most recent) president to have been impeached. That is to say, accused of "high crimes and misdemeanors." Andrew Johnson (president following Lincoln) was also impeached. Both were acquitted, and no president has ever been removed from office.

Nixon was facing probable impeachment and a real possibility of being removed from office. He therefore resigned to avoid such a fate.

Only two presidents have ever been impeached. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Both were found not guilty by the Senate and completed their terms.

Clinton was impeached by an overpartisan Republican leadership in the House. He was acquitted by the way. For Repubs that means he was not guilty.

Nixon resigned before he could be impeached. He was too big a coward to face his punishment like a man.

it was Clinton, though he was never kicked out. Andrew Johnson was the only president to have been removed from office by means of impeachment.
