OK I was lost for a minute about what movie. You should have put the title..
I saw the movie Friday. Matt shot the " obscure" guy because he didn't want a witness or competition to the whole thing.
I guess we will have to wait for the DVD and the Directors comments. My boyfriend and I think that what ever was int he envelope, sent Mark to finish the job. But that is just our hypothesis about what happened.

He's not as obscure as you think. He was the guy who went through cop training school with Matt Damon. They showed him in the beginning becoming friends with Matt Damon. Then, when Matt Damon became a detective, the obscure guy, as you call him, was a regular officer. Remember, Matt Damon told him he looked like he was dressed to invade Poland? Matt Damon encourages the obscure guy to become a detective, I guess, because in the next few scenes we see the two of them (in plain clothes) going to interview the mother of someone who has been killed. Later, in the end, we learn that Jack Nicholson also used him, the obscure guy, as an informant. All along, the obscure guy was also a "rat." He kills Leo and the black guy since they both know that Damon is an informant. Damon kills the obscure guy because the obscure guy knows Damon is a rat and Damon wants to eliminate anyone who knows this so he can save himself. Mark Wahlberg shoots Damon because, presumably, Damon's girlfriend opens the envelope Leo gave her and inside the envelope is information about Damon being a rat. Wahlberg kills him to avenge the death of Martin Sheen and because he hated Damon throughout the movie, anyway,

It turns out that Jack Nicholson had a second mole in the police department. The second mole shoots Leo to save himself and Matt Damon. He then shoots the black cop because he is a witness. Then Matt Damon shoots the second mole so that nobody else will know his secret. Finally, Mark Wahlberg, a good cop, shoots Matt Damon.

I'm guessing because of the actors you mention that you're talking about The Departed.

Sorry, haven't seen it yet, but want to.
