I tried plugging in a PC game controller to the USB 2.0 port on the Playstation 2 with little success. Is it possible to use a PC USB device on a Playstation 2?

No, the USB drive can only be used with PS2 compatible devices. They make a keyboard, and also something like a flash drive that can be used to transfer game saves from the computer to the PS2.

The USB ports on the PS2 are used for things like power for the AirFlow controllers, PS2 mice, and stuff like that. There is actually a fan designed for the PS2 that gets its power from these USB ports.

Not unless you have specific drivers for the device that will work with a PS2 ( I don't know of any game controllers that use the USB). Sony has a few accessories they sell that use the USB, like the headset that came with "SOCOM: US Navy Seals". Sorry to burst your bubble
