there is not exactly a lack of fuel yet and not only in the States. The problem is that the fossile oil resources of the earth are limited. It took millions of years to create them, and they remained untouched until the 19th century. We use non renewable energy thousands of times faster than their production rate, which means in less than 50 years if we keep this kind of waste, there won't be any oil left. That leaves us with electricity, and solar, wind, etc.. plus nuclear energy.
Add to that the fact that the countries who are the biggest producers belong to underdeveloped areas of the world, and that they are fed up of using their natural resources to feed the greedy western world without real profit for them.
The shortage, present or in the very near future and their desire for their own welfare leads to increasing prices of oil and natural gas.
A very interesting site, www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net will give you more precise figures, and the effects of even a small shortage on everyday's life.

it's probably cuz people in the u.s. choose to drive $53,000 cars like the escalade and the hummer which is stupid because over the course of time they probably take three times that amount when you actually add up the price of all the gas the vehicle uses day in and day out so maybe if people would stick to the simple cars in the world then maybe, just maybe there would not be a gas shortage!! thank you, i am done now LOL!!

Too many vehicles
Most vehicles are very inefficient,
very high miles driven per person per day,
Not enough public transportation services,
Big three killed public transportation initiatives,
Not enough local oil, US has only about 5% of what it needs everything was planned with the car in mind - i.e. city/town planning,
High number of cars per person,
Oil comes from afar,
Oil comes from politically unstable sources,
Oil is politically connected and influenced,
Too many middle men,
Refining capacity is low, distribution is expensive,
More global demand, other sources are not as viable as yet, other sources are expensive,
US Govt is spending more on war and less on research.
Lesser finds from exploration.
GOOGLE OPEC, OIL PRICE POLICY, PRICE OF OIL, OIL MARKET.

Do we lack fuel? Maybe because of the millions of Americans driving cars everyday.
