I know what friction is.
I just want to know WHY it occurs.

When a body is in motion on a rough surface or through a viscous medium such as air, water or any other liquid, there is resistance to its motion due to interaction of its contact surface with the surroundings. We call such resistance a force of friction.

This force arises from the roughness of the two surfaces in contact. The rougher the surface, the more the force of friction. The smoothest of surfaces when properly magnified reveals many irregularities. The surfaces in contact really touch each other at few points and a really accurate description of frictional forces would include electrostatic forces between atoms and molecules where the surfaces are in contact.

There re really two kinds of frictional forces; static and kinetic.
The kinetic force of fricton is generally < the static force of friction.
But both are independent of the area of contact though dependent on the nature of the surfaces.

Yes friction between the air and the space shuttle is the reason the craft glows red hot on re-entry. The SR71 spy plane was said to glow with air friction. Whilst a kite may not glow air friction remains.

when 2 surface come into contact with each other, molecular bonds form between them. The force it takes to overcome friction is the force it takes to break those bonds. Different substances form different bonds and different numbers of bonds so the force of friction is different between different types of surfaces
