Ooo! Ooo! I know the answer to this one! Pick me! Pick me!

First, if you have very hairy legs, I would suggest using a pair of electric clippers to get the bulk of the hair down to stubble. The kind I'm talking about is the kind they can put the different height plastic guards on to get different heights of hair - the kind of clippers they use in military boot camp to clip all the hair off new recruits- the "buzzy" kind.

Next, take a hot shower- about as hot as you can stand to make the hairs soften up and make it easier to shave them.

Use a gel based moisturizing shave cream and a triple blade razor like the Venus razor for women.

If the hair is nice and soft and you are using a good moisturizing shaving gel, the hair should come of in one swipe of the razor.

Since this will probably be the first time you have ever shaved your legs, you will notice that they will be shiny- this is because of all the dead skin you will take off along with the hair. It's called exfoliation.

IMPORTANT! After you shave your legs, to keep them from feeling irritated and to keep hairs from becoming ingrown (which will cause big, ugly zit-looking sores on your legs), use a good moisturizing lotion to soften your legs and keep them healthy looking.

Interesting side note- if you use the clippers and razor on your underarm hairs, there is no extra surface area for B.O. causing bacteria to grow, and it makes it easier to wash your armpits.

If you are talking shaving and not wax or a depilatory cream, the first time is a bit of a struggle. You'll have lots of hair which will clog the razor. One idea would be to use a beard clipper to remove the heaviest growth, another would be to use a depilatory to take heavy growth off.

Everyday shaving: I use the Wilkinson Sword "Intima" razor for the big areas of my thighs and a Gillette "Divine" for the areas that are more difficult to get at.
Don't use pre-mixed creams or gels. These dry your skin out, which causes horrible itching. Use soap in a bowl, and brush on to create foam. If you don't want to shave every day, talc reduces the itching caused by the regrowing hairs. If you shave your legs you will need to moisturize. I do this before I go to sleep. There are creams that allegedly slow regrowth. I've tried these without much success.

Flush the skin with cold water after shaving. Also don't shave in a cold bathroom. Shaving off the tops of your goosebumps is a sure way of getting a skin rash. It helps if you have a full length mirror in the bathroom, and make sure that there's plenty of light.

Never reshave a shaved area. Give it one gentle swip and move on. You can catch missed spots next time. If you reshave a spot, It'll cause razor bumps. Use lots of shaving cream.

You could try using a buzz clipper to take it down shorter to speed things up. Shaving long leg hairs is time consuming.

Use a woman's razor.

If you get red spots, soak in epsom salt and scrub your legs with a coarse sponge. That'll help ingrown hairs to come out.

The more you do it, the easier it gets and the less spots you get.

mageapprentice got it best. Definately take her advice. Also, what kind of gel to use depends on your skin.My sister has very sensitive skin for example and uses a gel made for that, while I have very dry skin and use a gel made for that. Watch using an elecetric razor though. They can irritate the skin. To irritate it like that and then shave over the area can be a bad combination. I've made that mistake before.
