We live in Texas on a ranch also. We keep all the brush away from the yard, keep the yard mowed short. We also keep some thing to kill them with. If it's hot they are looking for the coolest place. They strike the length they are. Cats do help. My husband swears by the sulfur method it does get rid of rattle snakes under the house. I have found no one will do any thing in Texas about a copperhead. We are on our own

I had several copperhead snakes around my ranch house. We got us some cats to control the mice in the barn. Surprising we also limited our sighting of snakes. We still have all the cats heathly and alive.

You'll never get rid of them, the only way to get rid of snakes is to get rid of all the rodents, other small mammals, birds, lizards, and frogs. The best way to deal with venomous snakes is to leave them alone. They will never come after you to attack, they will only bite to defend themselves and for food. You will not be mistaken for food unless you are less than a foot tall.
As I've said answering a rattlesnake question most people who get bitten by venomous snakes are bitten on the hands or arms. Now if the snake is at most 5 inches tall, how does it bite some ones arm? The answer: they were messing with it.

dont kill them. they are probably not even copperheads. but illness carried but rodents (mice, rats)are way more harmful then the snake. and the snake will keep the rodent population down. snakes will not attack you or bite you unless you mess with them. so respect them and u wont have a problem. its better to see a snake every once in a while then to get rabies(will kill you) from a mouse or infected rat. leave the poor snakes alone there doin u a favor

I've heard of a couple of ways to get rid of snakes. One way is to put out mothballs around your yard and house, and they are supposed to discourage the snakes from coming into your yard. Another is to burn sulfur, and put it around the house. And if you want to kill a snake without touching it, this is the weirdest way I've heard to do so far. A customer told me to take a plastic egg, like those used for Easter, and put a real chicken egg yolk inside of it. Then take the plastic egg and put it with real chicken eggs and put it where you know the snake will get it. Supposedly, the snake doesn't know the difference, and will eat the plastic egg too, and since snakes can't digest plastic, it would die from it. I hope this info helps.

We have them here in NC and my brother uses a 20 guage shotgun on them. My daughter almost picked one up last year in our backyard. One bit my neighbor's dog and it had to be put down also. There was an idiot who picked one up to keep it from getting run over by cars and when he put it down the snake bit him twice on the arm.

Sulfur can be found in pharmacies. Some people say sulfur works and some say it does not. There is a snake repellent. Places like Lowes will have it. Glass eggs will kill them. They swallow the eggs and the eggs break inside of them and it cuts them.
