apparently, the first two people didn't read your question. As you can not have big animals I would suggest a turtle (that's because i have always wanted one). My girlfriend has a ferret which she loves and it is very playful and loving.Although this may be considered a rodent i would still give it some thought because it has the ability to give friendship and love. Maybe a Bunny rabbit?

First off bunny rabits are rodents, but I suppose you can break your rules for the cute things. Secondly ferrets are weasles not rodents, you didn't say that but someone else did.
I LOVE RATS.

Get a bunny they are really neat. And they can be kept indoors as long as you are willing to clean the cage ever couple days. They will pick a spot to there business, so you can litter train them. We have two, but keep them outside because our dogs. Bunnies don't like to be handle (or at least ours don't) but they do like to be petted.

Lizards might be your best bet. Mammals are more playful than reptiles, but if you can't handle a rodent your choices are limited. Not even a guinea pig???

Think about a bird. They are very social, easy to contain, not too expensive, and come in all sizes. A pair of lovebirds are so much fun, or a parakeet. Birds love to interact with people. They will play games with you, and are very intelligent and teachable.

how aobut a ferret? They are very plaful and small. If do require human contact to avoid agression...and they can sometimes smell if their glands arent removes.
But over all good pets

Hedgehogs are neat, they make great pets. Or if you are into snakes I hear great things about ball pythons. Maybe a tortoise, or a ferret.

Well that leaves you with a ferret, fish hermit crab or reptile, well when you figure out what you want, then the one you should get in one that is homeless,
