Because a man of his status requires animals which have speed and think broader than the thought of food and sleep. He needs something that can fly and send messages. He doesnt care for hedwig, he just uses her. What would he use a sloth for? to retrieve magical leaves?

Okay, I'm going to say two things.
1. Really, I don't think this was needed.
2. JK Rowling knows, and on the Hogwarts list, it had said the only allowed animals.
That's it. I don't think that making a sloth in Harry Potter would be very.... you know.

On the list of supplies for school, it said you may only bring a cat, toad, or owl. Although I guess he could have brought a sloth, since Ron brought a RAT (even though it turned out to be Pettigrew, but whatever).
