Democrats have been quite dominant (and still are) in the southern US states for quite a while.

Democratic party. They fell out of power in the south with the election of Jimmy Carter. His adminstrations poor handling of domestic issues and double digit inflation rate coupled with high taxes disillusioned the conservative south which turned to the Republican Ronald Reagan in record numbers in the next election. They have been there ever since.
