Private landlords usually want at least a months deposit in advance on top of the first months rent in advance (some may even ask 3 months). They will probably ask for references from previous landlords as well.

I have been a private landlord in the past and I am trying not to be mean here but your situation only screams problems to me. Most landlords will ask you to pay the council tax so if you think that getting a private rental house will mean the council won't catch up with you your on a hiding to nothing.

I would be looking for other renters.

Good Luck! Many places check your credit and want to make sure you are able to pay the rent. They also check bank accounts. Plus some do want first and last month. You would have a better chance of going to place with a "for rent" sign that are not ran by any managing companies.

If you go through an agency they'll probably do a credit check, so look through the ads in the local papers for a private landlord. As long as your other half is working, you shouldn't have a problem.

yeah, forget about an apartment complex, look for a privately owned place...they are less likely to check your credit.
