How about "edge of your seat" instead of scary? After the hallway full of blood in The SHining, there isn't much scary out there anymore.
For a good, edge of your seat "whodunnit", try Unforgettable with Ray Liotta.
Or, if you really must have scary, rent the original "Night of the Living Dead" - most people have never seen it. It's black and white, so that may not float your boat. The original Halloween movie was pretty scary, but I haven't seen it in a while and the special effects and soundtrack may not be up to today's standards. The Original CHild's Play is good if you have never seen any of the others (those were a joke, and the first one won't be as scary if you have seen the others). Finally, the original Nightmare on Elm Street with Johnny Depp is pretty good as well.

You have probably seen all the really good ones: the original Halloween, Blair Witch Project, the original version of The Haunting (1963), The Exorcist, Psycho. I agree with the previous answer. These new ones are the pits. The ones I've seen lately are full of special effects, and you know it isn't real, so it is totally not scary.

I don't think there are many scary movies out there these days. A friend of mine thinks "Signs" & "It" are pretty scary. Best of luck.
